Menopausal mice study suggests estrogen may help fight UTIs

Estrogen levels drop dramatically in menopause, a time when the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) increases significantly. Researchers at the School of Medicine have found new evidence in mice that the two phenomena are connected by more than just timing.

Sandra Fluke kicks off Danforth Center’s spring lecture series

Attorney and women’s rights activist Sandra Fluke, who last February testified before the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee on the need to provide access to contraception, will kick off the spring lecture series sponsored by the Danforth Center on Religion & Politics at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, in Simon Hall’s May Auditorium.

Rosa L. Parks Award recipient works to improve streets named for Martin Luther King

Melvin White decided the St. Louis street named for Martin Luther King Jr. fell far short of being worthy of its namesake – and he set out to change that. White founded the nonprofit Beloved Streets of America, and WUSTL honored his efforts with this year’s Rosa L. Parks Award.

Dining Services improves reusable to-go box; offers take-home dinners for busy faculty, staff

Dining Services debuted a new environmentally friendly to-go program that includes both a compostable to-go box and a redesigned reusable box. Dining Services also recently began offering take-home heat-and-eat meals for four, aimed at busy campus faculty and staff.

Brown School names three new assistant deans

The Brown School has appointed three assistant deans. Cynthia Williams has been promoted to assistant dean for field education and community partnerships; Nancy B. Mueller has been named assistant dean for planning and evaluation; and Freddie Wills Jr. has been named assistant dean for strategic implementation.

The Gephardt Institute for Public Service at WUSTL has announced recipients of the Innovation Grants for Community-Based Teaching and Learning. The grants provide faculty members with financial support for curriculum development and implementation.
